Examples of XSPEC model MYTorus fits to Suzaku data for the Seyfert 2 galaxies NGC 4388, Mkn 3, Circinus galaxy, NGC 4945. (Click on the individual source names or the appropriate plot to go to the page with more details about that source.) The direct comparison of the four AGN here illustrates the different types of X-ray spectra that are representative of many Seyfert galaxies. In the case of NGC 4388 the line-of-sight and averaged global column densities are consistent with each other and are Compton-thin. In Mkn 3, the line-of-sight column density is nearly Compton-thick but the average global column density is Compton-thin. In the Circinus galaxy, the line of sight is not obscured and the observed spectrum is that of Compton-thick reflection. In NGC 4945 the line-of-sight and average global column densities are consistent with each other, and both are Compton-thick.

In all cases, the role of the Compton-scattered continuum in its contribution to the overall spectrum can be clearly seen as it is marked in blue and labeled “CS.” The direct, line-of-sight (or unscattered, zeroth-order continuum) is shown in orange and labeled with “Z.”
